About the Board

As we celebrate our 18th year as a charity and look forward to the next stage of our journey, Kidscan Children’s Cancer Research, are seeking to bring together a committee of business leaders to form our very first Volunteer Business Board.

Once established board members will work collaboratively to plan and deliver a series of fundraising events designed to engage the North-West business community. From traditional dinners, to supercar rallies – the board will have autonomy over the design of the events. With the support of the Kidscan Team, the board will be expected to monitor and report success directly to the Kidscan Trustees. The board will also play a pivotal role in the delivery of Kidcan’s strategy, and will be expected to play a role in enhancing the charities professional network.

The boards success will depend on a range of skills and backgrounds, making it the perfect fit for professionals from a range of backgrounds including marketing, finance, HR, across all sectors.

This is an exciting opportunity to form the first of many boards across the country, so if you think you have the experience, skills and network to make a difference we would love to hear from you.

“We want to create a Fundraising Board where business leaders can come together to organise a number of fundraising events, say a ball or a day at the race track.

We’re looking for individuals, who are committed to giving something back but don’t want the extra responsibilities of governance that becoming a full Trustee brings.

It’s a fantastic opportunity for an influential person bursting with ideas, energy and contacts, to bring this to the table and help Kidscan strive for new, less toxic treatments for childhood cancer.”

How to Apply

To apply submit a CV and covering letter outlining why you wish to be considered for the fundraising board to: recruitment@kidscan.org.uk. After initial consideration, interviews will be held and 5 successful applicants will be welcomed to a lab tour to find out more about the research the board will help to fund.

After the tour, the founding members will hold their first meeting to allocate a chair, secretary and treasurer. It will then be the responsibility of the board to recruit any further members.

More about the Business Board

How much time do I need to commit?

Each member of the committee will be expected to commit a minimum of 2-4 hours per month which may increase depending on any fundraising activities established. The committee will be expected to meet at least 6 times per year in person or via conference call and all members will be expected to actively participate in meetings contributing to the discussion and sharing ideas, contacts and networks.

How much does the board need to raise?

Each year Kidscan Children’s Cancer Research awards a series of grants including PhD Studentships worth £65,000. It is envisaged that the board will raise enough to fund a PhD studentship each year. Once the board is well established, with a strong series of events and networks, it could raise in excess of £100,000.

Coleen's Story

Coleen was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma when she was 14 years old. She underwent chemotherapy for over a year before surgery. Although Coleen is now many years into her survivorship she still struggles with the late effects caused by the treatments given to her.

“I had loads of investigations and I ended up being diagnosed with tachycardia as well, so we knew the chemotherapy had damaged my heart along with everything else. It was a shock, and it brought me back to the reality that there are still things going wrong and the longer out of treatment I am, the more side effects that I’m getting and the more severe”

The money raised by the new business board will go directly to finding new targeted treatments for children with cancer, so they can survive and thrive throughout adulthood without suffering late-effects.
