Kickstarter Placement: Social Media Executive

Terms: part-time 25 hours per week, hybrid working with office based in Salford, six-month placement 

Remuneration: National Living Wage (dependant on age) 

Department: Marketing 

Accountable to: Head of Operations & Marketing 

Primary objective: To increase performance, donations and lead generation through the management of all social media channels. 

Kickstart Requirements: 

Our Kickstart programme is an opportunity for young people aged 16-24 and claiming Universal Credit. You will gain valuable paid work experience for six months at Kidscan, the children’s cancer research charity. All applications should be submitted only after consultation with your Job Centre+ Work Coach for a Kickstart placement. 

To be eligible for the Kickstart programme you will need to be: 

Aged 16-24 

Unemployed in receipt of Universal Credit 

Referred by your Jobcentre Work Coach 

Be available to work for 25 hours 

Be able to undertake a 6-month work placement programme 

Please note eligible applicants must be referred by their local JobCentre Plus as you will be asked for your unique introduction code. 

Brief Role Outline:  

Day-to-day management of Kidscan social media presence across all platforms; from the publication of content to community engagement with a focus on improving performance, increasing donations & driving leads.  

Work directly with the Content Marketing Manager to plan content ahead of time and support on content creation including photography, videography and social copy creation.  

Liaise with external designer to secure required content e.g infographics 

Analyse and report on channel performance, using finding to make recommendations and inform future content campaigns.  

Work with fundraising team to identify and engage with new supporters through social media 

Support Head of Operations and Marketing with campaign delivery 

Working at Kidscan: 

Currently in the UK 20% of children diagnosed with cancer do not survive because treatment options are limited. Of those who do survive, 60% will go on to develop late-effects such as hearing loss, organ damage and bone damage caused by treatments use to save their lives. As well as funding research to find safe new treatments for children with cancer, Kidscan also raise awareness of the issues children with cancer face.  

The Kidscan Social Media Executive will play a vital role in informing more people about Childhood Cancer. Working with the Head of Operations and Marketing you will take the lead on the management of the Kidscan social media accounts including scheduling content, engaging with supporters and reporting on the success of the accounts. 

You will work with the Content Manager to plan content ahead of time and will liaise directly with our third-party graphic design team to create infographics and content for each channel. You will also work with the wider Kidscan team to generate key stories and ensure that campaign content is represented in the schedule. You will be expected to draft copy for the content you produce and may be required to produce blog content to accompany key stories.  

Between publishing content, you will also be expected to monitor the accounts, answering messages and actively engaging with key supporters and donors. Working with the Head of Operations you will also develop monthly reports for the Kidscan Trustees highlighting the success of the accounts.  

During the 6 months you will also have the opportunity to work on a range of projects to support the communications plan including filming and photoshoots. You can also attend a number of events in order to effectively produce content and will gain experience in paid advertising.  

We hope that this 6-months placement will develop and showcase your social media marketing skills: from copywriting to content creation and scheduling. Working with the team, suppliers and third-party teams you will also enhance your project management and communication skills.  

The placement will be a hybrid of homeworking and in-office working. The 25 hours will be split across 4 days and your shift patterns will be agreed on appointment; however you will be expected to work at least 2 days of the week in the office: Kidscan Children’s Cancer Research, Alumni House, University of Salford, Salford, M54NY. 

Essential skills, experience and qualifications  

Although training and mentorship will be provided throughout the placement, we do expect that the ideal candidate will be able to hit the ground running and will therefore have working experience in social media management with particular focus on Facebook and Twitter. Be able to demonstrate a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, in particular excel & word and have strong spoken and written communication skills in English.  

Working pattern and contracted hours 

25 Hours split across 4 days to be agreed on appointment. A standard working day is 7.25 hours. Kidscan has embraced hybrid working including working from home, but you will be expected to attend the office in Salford 2 days per week minimum. 

Hourly rate of pay 

National Minimum Wage, dependent on age. 

Details of employability support incl training opportunities 

During the 6 months placement you will be mentored by the Head of Operations and Marketing who will guide you through the role. You will receive training on different social media marketing platforms including Hootsuite, Facebook and Twitter. 

In addition, Kidscan is working with the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce to provide support. Because we are a small team you will also have the opportunity to work with other members of the team and learn about their third sector roles including community and corporate fundraising.
