Member of Scientific Committee

The Kidscan children’s cancer research charity is looking to recruit new members to its scientific committee. The committee reports directly to the board of trustees, giving recommendations on the merits of research proposal based on medical/scientific need and the quality of the proposed work. Potential members should be either experts in cancer treatment / research, drug discovery or the causes of pediatric cancer and may be from clinical or non-clinical backgrounds.

The Kidscan children’s cancer research charity was established in 2002 to specifically support research into new and improved treatments for children with cancer. Kidscan was the first charity of its kind, and has operated from the University of Salford for the last 16 years. By funding research into drug treatments and support programmes, designed exclusively with children in mind, the charity hopes to reduce both short – and long – term side effects of childhood cancer medicines. Our major focus is on the development of treatments, which are less damaging to the bodies of children and young adults whilst retaining, or improving on, the effectiveness of many current treatments.

Remuneration: This is a voluntary role, however, reimbursement of modest travel and subsistence costs will be provided if face-to-face meetings are required. All the appointments will be for an initial period of up to three years

Time Requirements: Committee members will receive an average of 10 proposals per year and will be required to provide feedback, to the chair, on reports generated by a separate team of external peer reviewers so that final recommendations on the suitability of funding can be made. This is not a direct peer review position; the scientific committee is in place to give strategic direction to the research funding awarded by Kidscan.

Application Procedure: Applicants should forward their CV along with a covering letter to Dr David Pye at the following email address d.pye@salford.ac.uk the closing date for applications is the 31st of August 2018.  Informally enquires can be directed to Dr Pye at the above email address or by using the telephone number 0161 295 4701.
