Mam Tor Route

Stage 1 – Castleton to Mam Tor

Distance: 2.4 miles / 3.8 km

From the car park we walk up through the picturesque village of Castleton towards the forbidding entrance of Peak Cavern, which looms above. Crossing the stream which gushes from the entrance of the cave, take a stony path across fields, which crosses the steep Winnats Pass road at the site of Speedwell Caverns.

Behind Speedwell Caverns the path continues, traversing across the hillside and slowly gaining height as it passes both Treakcliffe Cavern and Blue John Cavern.

From here we walk across several fields to the start of our climb up Mam Tor. A short sharp ascent on a stepped path takes us to the summit of Mam Tor.

Stage 2 – Mam Tor to Lose Hill

Distance: 2 miles / 3.2 km

After taking up. the wonderful 360 views from Mam Tor summit we start along the great ridge along an easy and well maintained path which gently rises up and down to reach Hollins Cross. We then continue towards the craggy top of Back Tor, climbing a short steep slope to the summit.

From here we continue along the path to the next high point, Lose Hill Pike, with excellent views all around.

Stage 3 – Lose Hill to Hope

Distance: 2 miles / 3.2 km

From Lose Hill Pike we descend steeply down the hill towards Hope passing Lose Hill farm and along the minor road into the centre of Hope Village

Stage 4 – Hope to Castleton

Distance: 1.7 miles / 2.7 km

From the centre of Hope village we walk a short distance along the main road before turning down Pindale Road. After 250 metres, we turn right onto a footpath above Peakshole Water.
