Life lessons from running a marathon

There are many lessons you will learn along the way when you decide to do a run. Runs are never easy, but it’s not always the prize at the end that is the greatest reward. It is the skills that you learn along the way that make all the difference.

We’ve mentioned three which we believe are main skills that you gain from doing a challenge.

Discipline

The first ingredient to a successful life is self-discipline — the ability to overcome challenges that arise and persevering regardless of the odds or obstacles that exist. It is the art of forgoing instant gratification to pursue a greater gain that requires more time and effort.

This is a skill you learn and develop over time when you are training for a marathon. There will be days that friends and family will ask you to come out for drinks, the temptation of eating those bags of sweets and crisps or just snoozing the alarm for your early morning running. With self-discipline, you start making choices that are in alignment with your goals and disregard activities that don’t contribute to your success.

Consistency

Consistency is the second ingredient added to the mix. Without consistency, you will have trouble succeeding in any endeavour you decide on doing.

Consistency is an important factor when you are training for your run. This is because you need to train regularly to improve your fitness level and mental toughness. By doing so, you will start to notice the difference in your performance on and off the track.

This is a transferrable skill that you and the people around will love. It provides you with clarity and allows you to focus on task much more effectively. In your business life, having consistency creates a sense of trust, respect and credibility within your organisation.

Confidence

Confidence is the icing on the cake. It is to know yourself, believe in yourself and act on those beliefs.

Running allows you to test and exceed your limits. The goal is forever changing whether it is 5K one week 10k the next. Over time you will start to feel confident in yourself to carry out any activity. Just like two above confidence is also a transferable skill that you can bring into your personal and business life.

Conclusion

If you’re ready to challenge yourself feel free to check out some of our runs for you this year or if you need another reason to run a marathon take a look and see what you will learn along the way!
