Mary Bannister Sponsored Hair Cut

This year, 4 year-old Mary Bannister raised an amazing £648 for us by undergoing a brave sponsored hair cut! Read on to find out about Mary’s story.

When Mary was born, her big brother Jacob was undergoing intensive chemotherapy for leukaemia on Ward 84, Manchester. Jacob endured the gruelling treatment for almost 3 and a half years until he was 6 years-old and the treatment was complete. This was a devastating experience for the whole family to go through – although Mary didn’t know what was going on at the time, as she has grown older she has become very aware and wanted to complete this brave challenge in honour of her older brother’s strength during his treatment.

Mary decided that she wanted to have 8 inches of hair cut off to donate to The Little Princess Trust. Mary asked her friends and family to sponsor her so that she could receive donations for Kidscan Children’s Cancer Research – she has managed to raise an amazing £648!! We’re so proud of Mary’s amazing contribution, it takes a lot of bravery to do something like Mary has done.

Throughout the treatment of chemotherapy, the loss of hair can have a major emotional impact. It can leave children feeling extremely self-conscious and down about their appearance. Chemotherapy has many serious side effects, but hair loss for a young child is the one everyone associates cancer treatment with.

Fundraisers like this allow us to fund vital research to find safer treatments for children diagnosed with cancer, so they don’t have to suffer from the side effects from current treatments. They are also the perfect way to spread awareness of the side effects of current treatments.
