Dr Josh Lehr

University of Salford

Biography

After completing my undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, I undertook a PhD at the same at the same institution investigating the formation of thin organic films at electrodes via radical grafting processes.

I subsequently carried out considerable postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, focused on supramolecular systems for molecular recognition and the development of (bio-)sensors.

Thereafter I took up a lecturing position at Nottingham Trent University before moving to the University of Salford in 2018 to take up the position of Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry.

“The placement students are working on fabrication electrochemical biomarker sensors for monitoring patient response during treatment. Such sensors have a potential to give clinicians vast information in order to make more informed real-time decisions on treatment. This includes the early detection of minimal residual disease associated with relapse as well as adverse response to certain drugs.”

Areas of research

Biomarkers, Electrochemistry, Nanotechnology, Materials, Supramolecular Chemistry

My research is interdisciplinary and at the intersection of chemistry, nanotechnology, biology, and engineering. Broadly speaking it has focused on construction and study of functional molecular architectures at interfaces. This leads to the development of switchable surfaces, sensors, supramolecular interfaces, and bioelectronic interfaces for medical diagnostics. Complimentary to this work, I have an interest in the fundamental study of the formation, characteristics, and electrochemical behaviour of thin organic films at electrodes. Additionally I also have an interest energy materials for batteries and capacitors.
