This October KidsCan Chair, Paul Moonan, will head off on an epic adventure, taking on a hut-to-hut trek through the Picos de Europa,Spain.  Joining a guided tour, the challenge will see Paul trekking 70km with a total elevation of approximately4,450 metres.

Having previously completed the Tour de Mont Blanc Trek, for North West Cancer Research with his daughter Rachel, and being the oldest participant on trek, Paul decided he wanted to complete one final multi-day trek for charity. Having worked near the Picos de Europa in the eighties, Paul often admired their beauty and remoteness and felt a fascination with the range. Combined with the increase in difficulty compared to his previous trek,the mountain range provided the perfect back drop for Paul’s adventure.

Paul Said “I am excited, nervous and daunted! My training unfortunately has not gone to plan. I suffered a bad muscle injury in April which has meant that I haven’t been able to train as originally planned and still can’t confidently do any running. I’ve tried to do other activities to build my fitness level but I am worried that it may feel like a far bigger challenge than last time.”

For Paul, however, the motivation is much bigger than completing the trek. As Chair of KidsCan, he is passionate about supporting the charity’s work to help children and their families facing the devastating impact of childhood cancer, while funding research to improve treatments for young patients and providing connection for children and their families on their cancer journey.

“It’s particularly nice being able to raise money for KidsCan. KidsCan is an amazing charity that provides fantastic support for young people and their families who are undertaking very difficult journeys to confront their cancer diagnosis.”

Paul hopes his fundraising will make a lasting difference.Reaching his target could enable KidsCan to fully support a one-year researchproject undertaken by a university student, leaving a lasting legacy and changingthe cancer journey for children and their families.

With a challenging trek ahead, Paul knows there will be tough moments on the trail. But with every step helping to support KidsCan’s vital work, he has plenty of motivation to reach the finish line.
