Isla's Story

Isla’s journey began in March this year when she started to feel unwell, she had a temperature, felt sick and had a slight tummy ache, a visit to the doctors confirmed she had a urine infection however nearly 4 weeks later, the symptoms remained and she had started to lose weight and after several trips back to the Doctor and a 3rd visit to the hospital we were later hit with the news she had cancer. An MRI scan and biopsy confirmed she had Wilms Tumour, a type of Kidney Cancer.

Within 2 weeks of her diagnosis she began treatment which was 2 different chemotherapy drugs administered every week for 4 weeks. The chemo made her very poorly and we spent pretty much most of those 4 weeks in the hospital, within 11 days she had lost all her beautiful, long blonde hair. In Mid May she underwent a massive operation to remove the tumour, kidney and appendix. 2 Weeks later we were given the positive news that the cancer was stage 1 and that it had all been removed. The protocol was to continue with an additional 4 weeks of chemotherapy which again made Isla very poorly.

On the 17th June, 2 days before her 6th Birthday Isla (quite proudly) rang the end of treatment bell.

Whilst Isla is now doing extremely well she does still suffer with the side effects of the treatment and frequently gets upset that she has no hair and has not been able to play with her friends. She is now looking forward to starting back at school.
