1874 Northwich FC Goalkeeper sparks fundraising drive in memory of inspirational childhood cancer sufferer

1874 Northwich FC goalkeeper has united the community with heroic fundraising efforts in memory of childhood cancer sufferer, Gracie McCall. Local backing has raised over £855 to date, with all proceeds going to children’s cancer research charity, Kidscan.

Goalkeeper and teaching assistant, Greg Hall, began wearing a blue bandana during last season’s matches. The unexplained headgear triggered conversation amongst fans and supporters, who were quick to jump behind him in order to support his fundraising efforts.

When fellow club Runcorn Linnets caught wind of Greg’s efforts, they offered a helping hand to raise awareness. Banding together in a match last season, the two teams organised a collection in order to mark Gracie’s brave battle with a rare brain tumour. Fans bought and wore matching blue bandanas in recognition of the special occasion. Extra donations poured in once word spread, including money collected from guests at a birthday party.

The teacher, who works for St. Cuthbert’s School in Withington, Manchester, followed Gracie’s struggle as she was one of his pupils. A week after the match, Greg was met with the saddening news that the inspirational five year old had lost her battle to the aggressive disease. All money raised from the match has gone towards Kidscan’s pioneering research into targeted treatments for childhood cancers.

Ged Carter of Kidscan, commented: “Gracie was an inspirational individual who touched so many people. Greg’s actions, by wearing the blue bandana, helps keep the awareness of how childhood cancer impacts everyone associated with this disease. On behalf of Kidscan our thanks go to all who contributed to the donation”
