Housing Units celebrates store’s 70th birthday with 70 mile Lake District challenge for Kidscan

Housing Units’ CEO Nick Fox is celebrating the home furnishings store’s 70th Birthday by completing a gruelling 70 mile Lake District run, cycle and kayak challenge in aid of children’s cancer research charity Kidscan.

Starting on Friday 19th and finishing on Saturday 20th May, Nick, along with five work colleagues, will begin with a 20 mile mountain run tackling peaks including the highest peak of all, Scafell Pike. The estimated running time for this initial stage of the three part challenge is eight hours, with an elevation equivalent to climbing up and down The Shard five times.

The second leg comprises a 40 mile endurance cycle summiting three of the steepest and longest passes in the UK, estimated to take five hours with a total elevation of 5,478 feet. Finally, the last leg of the challenge is a four hour, 10 mile endurance kayak down the longest lake in England, Windermere.

Housing Units has partnered with Kidscan since April 2015, and has already raised £16,000 to date. Nick Fox and his team have set a target to raise a further £10,000 through this challenge, and have already raised over £7,000 towards that goal. Every penny will support Kidscan’s research into new and improved treatments designed specifically to treat childhood cancers.

Nick Fox, CEO at Housing Units, commented: “The challenge we face is nothing compared to the one 1,600 children and their families face each year in the UK when given the devastating news of a childhood cancer diagnosis. Housing Units is immensely proud to support the ground-breaking research Kidscan are leading in the fight against childhood cancer.”

Ged Carter, Director of Development at Kidscan, commented: “We can’t thank Nick and the Housing Units team enough for demonstrating tremendous determination and selflessness in taking on this epic challenge. Thanks also go to every single person who has donated money – because of you Kidscan is able to continue our vital research into childhood cancer, striving for a future where every child with cancer receives the treatment they need to survive and thrive.”
