Keep Running with Virtual Running

As more and more runs across the UK are postponed or cancelled due to Coronavirus we take a look at one of the best ways you can keep running, whilst raising money for your favourite charity. The best part? You can even win a medal at the same time!

What is virtual running?
A virtual run is a “race” that can be run or walked from any location and more often than not, over a period of time. Virtual Runs allow you to run at a pace and time that suits you. You can choose to run with your family, take regular walks with the dogs or even complete your run on a treadmill!

How does it work?
Each run provider have their own rules, but in general participants sign up to the run and pay a registration fee. For each run there is a time period in which to complete the specified distance. You must track your steps using an app or step counter so that you can submit proof that you have completed the distance before the closing. Once you have submitted proof, the provider will send you your medal!

How do I sign up?
There are many virtual run providers in the UK including Virtual Racing UK, Pow Virtual Running, My Race and Virtual Runner UK. Each provider has a range of races from small fun runs to marathons and more! There are a range of medals available so we advise you take your time to have a good look around – who knows you may end up joining more than one!

How do I raise money?
Raising money works in the same way as if you would run a physical run. Once you sign up, let us know and we will send you our fundraising pack, full of hints and tips. You advise you create an online fundraising page on JustGiving or Facebook to boost your donations!

Many virtual run providers donate a percentage of a registration fee to charity, but you don’t have to raise money for that charity once you have joined the race. It is your choice who you want to raise money for.

Do I need a virtual run provider?
Not necessarily! You could use an app such as MapMyRun to track your runs. Fundraising pages such as JustGiving and Facebook allow you to post updates to your supporters, so you can use this feature to update them on your progress! The only downfall is you won’t get a medal at the end of it!

Virtual running not your cup of tea? Don’t worry, Kidscan have charity places available for some of the UK’s most popular runs. And don’t forget, no matter wether you take on a virtual run or organised run – get in touch and let us know – so we can support you with our fundraising pack!
